Great Fun, but not Cheap for Beginners There are seven or eight three to five metre plywood walls with various degrees of overhang (or straight up), covered in plastic nodules for that bouldering, simulated rock climbing, experience. The clientèle range from the general public to rake thin gentlemen with arms thicker than their legs. There are a couple or three pull-up exercise places so that the general public can aim for that sort of physique. Everyone is softly spoken and kind. Many come withchildren, some of whom are encouraged to attempt to climb before they can walk.
The prices are 1) two hour beginners pack all inclusive for 2600 yen, and two hours is all a beginner will be able to bear before their arms feel like they are going to drop off, or 2) A one off 1000 yen registration fee, 1700 daily pass, and 400 yen climbing shoes rental fee. Thus if you go a lot it is only 1700 yen a day, and buy your own shoes for about 2500 yen second hand on Yahoo Auctions jp (search for “登山靴”) then it will become inexpensive. It is cheaper for children. We are not yet sure we will be going that often. It is very good exercise. There are hundreds of ways of climbing the walls, with instructions for the harder climbs, and the regulars offer advice, sometimes in English. The boss seems a little shy and after a brief safety explanation, leaves the customers to their own devices. There are climbing magazines to read, and bouldering competitions to watch on the TV screen. You can bring your own refreshments from the adjacent convenience store, and probably make friends if you go a few times. If you use the bypass and road around the back of Oouchi (past the Recycle Centre) then one can get there very quickly from central Yamaguchi.
Now during the pandemic everyone wears masks but we touch the same nodules on the wall. It seemed to me that the other climbers were very fit and healthy and we sterilized our hands with alcohol periodically.… – show
