崇徳天皇の御願寺として保延5年（1139年）に真言宗寺院として創建したそうです。
その後、浄土真宗に改宗。江戸時代に入り江戸へ移転、築地本願寺の寺中寺58ヶ寺の一つであったそうです。

墓地には江戸時代前期の俳人杉山杉風のお墓があります。
